Look Better In Your Clothes...Invest in a Tailor!

I've always been a curvy girl. It's true! I've always had a tiny waist, and a lot more of everything else everywhere else...you get me? So when I was growing up, I often had difficulty finding clothing that would fit properly. I'm sure you curvy girls out there know of the difficulty in which I speak: pants that gape in the back because you have to buy a size that fits your hips and not your waist; blouses that are too tight around your bust because you bought the smaller size that fits your waist; dresses that are too big because your hips and bust are a size 10, but your waist is a size 6; suits where the blazer is huge because you had to get the bigger size so the pants would fit. I tell you, I've had some serious wardrobe issues because of all the curvyness!

My grandmother, who recognized much sooner than I did that this was an issue, always said that the best way to deal with these wardrobe conundrums is to have a tailor. Someone who would pull things in and let things out for a perfect fit. She was a smart lady! While my grandmother specifically spoke to issues involving women with my body type, I soon realized that the curvy girls weren't the only ones suffering. I had friends who were shaped differently and who had a whole other set of problems when purchasing clothes. The truth is that certain brands fit some better than others. Some cuts may look great on me, but may be unflattering on my BFF...it is what it is, and I guess we have to accept it. Or do we?

As fashion has evolved, so has the fit of clothing. Some stores purposely cut their clothing to cater to a more diversely-shaped society. Major department stores have begun selling their suits as separates; you can now buy a size 10 blazer and a size 12 pant or skirt. Dresses are being cut so that a smaller waist is emphasized and more room allowed in the bust and hips. Jeans are being made with specific body types in mind (i.e. the Gap's Long and Lean Jeans, Old Navy's Sweetheart Jeans, etc). While I am pleasantly pleased with this evolution, I still recognize that in some instances a tailor may still be your best tool to make you look better in your clothing.

As I've gotten older and as I've progressed in my field, I have been taking my grandmother's advice and I have invested in a tailor. Now, not every item of clothing I purchase needs tailoring, but I have taken some items to my tailor to enhance their fabulousness. I often take my suit pants to my tailor to shorten or lengthen the legs. I have brought in some of my skirts to bring in the waist and give me more hip room. My tailor has even found a way to get rid of that annoying bust/button gaping that happens when I wear blouses. And, she has a little trick that makes my sheath dresses look amazing. The best thing is that my alterations are not expensive and quite reasonable. Mark my words...tailors are a fashionable, Professional Diva's dream!

Are you sold yet? If so, here are some things to consider when searching for a tailor:

1. How much experience does your prospective tailor have in adjusting clothing for women with your body type? Some tailors do a better job than others based on their experiences with a particular shape. Look for one that is proficient in working with the issues that you face...the tailor may have certain suggestions that he or she may have used in the past.

2. How much? You should request an alteration price list from your prospective tailor. Some tailors are more expensive than others. Some tailors charge more for one type of item and less for others. My tailor also doubles as my dry cleaner, so my alterations are less expensive because I give her other business. Maybe your prospective tailor will have a similar arrangement. Or, an arrangement based on the amount of alterations you anticipate having. You may be able to negotiate rates as well.

3. Bring a test item to your "interview." Once you have narrowed your search down to one or two individuals, bring an item of clothing for the prospective tailor to alter. Maybe it's a dress that you not longer wear, or a pair of pants from three seasons ago...bring it in to see how the tailor works. Does he or she take your measurements properly? Is he or she asking the appropriate questions regarding your desires and fit preferences for the item? Does he or she make suggestions as to how you can achieve the most favorable results, even if the suggestions are different from what you have in mind? How satisfied are you with the results?

4. Are you comfortable with your prospective tailor? The relationship between you and your tailor is and intimate one. You should trust him or her with your precious clothing. If you start to get a vibe from your tailor that he or she is not invested in the well being of you and your clothing, then it's time for a new tailor.

Do any of you use a tailor? If so, what are your experiences? What are some of the characteristics that are important to you for a tailor? Let us know!

NY&Co. Has Nail Color...And Lip Gloss!

Greetings Divas! As some of you may know, New York & Company is one of my favorite places to shop for high-quality, affordable business attire and accessories. So imagine my surprise when I ventured into the store last weekend and saw a display full of nail color and lip gloss. Now, ordinarily I am not one to purchase cosmetics in a clothing store that is not affiliated with a department store, but I was curious. The next day, I went back to NY&Co and purchased a couple of nail colors (they were 2 for $10), and a lip gloss...and I was impressed with all three items!

The nail polish applied smoothly and the color was rich, which is something I really enjoy in my nail color. I was also impressed at the color selection...there were plenty of colors that were appropriate in a professional environment. Unfortunately, I was in a "trying it out" mood and I'm horrible at polishing my own nails, so I didn't keep the polish on long enough to see if it chipped easily. I will, however, take the polish to my nail salon for a mani and pedi to see how it holds up...we shall see! With a $5 price tag, I do encourage you nail colornistas to check them out.

And now to the lip gloss...love it! Not too sticky...not too shiny...totally office appropriate. The glosses were 2 for $12, and it was worth the purchase. My only complaint is that there were only 3 available shades to choose from...I'm hoping they get more really soon!

So, would you try these nail colors or lip glosses? If you do (or if you have), please share with the class! Have a great week Divas!

Divas, I recently stumbled upon something that has revolutionized my entire life...well, maybe that's a bit extreme, but I did find a product that every professional woman should have in her work bag. Allow me to set the scene. You're in a taxi on your way to a job interview and you carelessly popped off the top button of your blouse. Or, you're in your office quickly changing into a little black dress for a company cocktail reception and you realize that you've smeared white deodorant remnants on your dress. Or, you found yourself extremely famished during lunch and ate an entire rack of ribs...the proof is in the little pieces of rib that have lodged themselves between your teeth. Let's just face the fact that sh*t happens! And when they do, you should have a Pinch Provisions Shemergency Kit in reach!

What's a Shemergency Kit? The Shemergency Kit is an amazing product from Pinch Provisions which contains 25 items that women find themselves needing to rectify common mishaps. Each kit contains the following items: a folding hair brush with mirror, hair spray, clear elastic bands, earring backs, hand lotion, a nail clipper, an emery board, clear nail polish, nail polish remover, a mending kit, a safety pin, double-sided tape, a lint remover, shoe shine towelettes, stain remover, static remover, breath freshener, lip balm, dental floss, pain reliever, deodorant towelettes, a tampon, adhesive bandages, facial tissues, and blotting tissues. Disclaimer: I was not solicited or paid by any one or any company to blog about the Shemergency Kit. I simply think it is an awesome find for Professional Divas, and I wanted to share...because I'm all about sharing!

Solid Body Tints...Courtesy of LUSH!

Well...this past Saturday I found myself back at LUSH Cosmetics. As you may recall, I visited LUSH a couple of months ago and completely fell in love with their products. I went to the mall on Saturday in search of a dress, and I was pleasantly surprised to learn that a new LUSH store had opened in Newport Center Mall...YES!!! I suddenly felt gravity unwillingly forcing me up the escalator and into the store (that's my story and I'm sticking to it). Of course I received a warm welcome from the sales staff, who were more than happy to help me spend money I really did not need to spend. And how do they achieve this? Well, they start trying out all kinds of product on you...and that is how I discovered the most fabulous product ever!

As some of you may know, I am a firm believer in wearing hosiery when I wear dresses and skirts to work. I just feel like it gives your work wear a more polished look. I usually receive minimum opposition to this stance during the winter months, mainly because stockings and tights are great barriers to the cold weather. Also, there are so many stylish varieties of hosiery out there that stockings and tights have become somewhat of an accessory. But many women look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them that I also wear hosiery during the summer months...please attempt to hide your shock! Seriously though, I do wear ultra, ultra sheer hosiery with my skirts and dresses in the summer...you can hardly tell they're there!

As I'm sharing this information with Michcella, the sales associate at LUSH, she responds by showing me Black Stockings, a new body tint. She rubs the product on my lower leg, and then starts blending it. And guess what...my leg looked as if I was wearing a pair of sheer hosiery. In other words, my leg looked amazing! The body tint allowed me to have the polish afforded by hosiery without wearing a pair of stockings. My legs were literally glowing! Check out what the LUSH website has to say about Black Stockings:

Dress your pins and smooth Black Stockings over your legs to give them a gorgeous, sun kissed glow. Created for darker complexions, Black Stockings balances out skin tone and gives a stunningly realistic tan with its coppery pigment and hints of shimmer. Have a paler skin tone? You can use this sexy little number too for healthy looking bronze shine. Spicy pimento berry oil, warming cinnamon and a hint of sweet orange oil give Black Stockings its warm, deep fragrance, just like a warm Caribbean beach.

Now, I have dark skin, so Black Stockings worked perfectly for me. If you have lighter skin, LUSH also carries Silk Stockings. Here's what they say:

Silk Stockings is one of our fantastically beautiful solid body tints. Give your legs some colour with a gorgeous sheen and an even skin tone all year round. This is the one for pale skins, a pinky blend of colours that melt onto the skin to give your gams a natural looking tint. Plus, it has the sensuous fragrance of jasmine, rose and sandalwood oils for an added level of seduction. Smooth some on for instant sex appeal. It also washes off easily, so your sheets won't suffer melt-y messes. You know, in case one thing leads to another.

Nice, right? In addition to priming your legs, the body tints can also give pale skin a little bit of extra color...without the use of a tanning bed. I love this product, simply because it alleviates my concern of not presenting a polished look at work when wearing dresses and skirts. It also offers a very nice compromise between hosiery sticklers like myself and those who want to go bare-legged. But don't take my work for it...actually, you should take my word for it...this product is wonderful! Which is why I must recommend LUSH's body tints as a must have for my fellow Professional Divas!

So, who's willing to try it out? If so, please be sure to share your thoughts with everyone. Have a great week!

Toodledo

Greetings Divas! Here we are at the beginning of a new work week...I’ll wait for the collective sigh! If you are anything like me, you cherish Sunday afternoons. Not just because there's a Real Housewives of Atlanta marathon on Bravo, but it is a time to plan and prepare for the upcoming week. I find that taking a few minutes to plan and prepare for the week helps me to be more efficient and productive during the week. As I stated in my previous post, “Preparation Is Key,” I take the time to plan what I will do each day at work, as well as what I will do before and after work. In doing so, I prioritize the things I need to accomplish, the things I want to accomplish, and any “extracurricular” activities I plan to get into during the week. Sounds a little neurotic? That may be true, but it helps me to maintain my sanity!

Over the past year, I have been using Toodledo to help me get my life in order. What its Toodledo you ask? Well, Toodledo is an online task and note manager that helps to improve your overall productivity. It allows you to enter, prioritize, and categorize your various to-do lists in an easy to use, online format. You can assign start dates and due dates to tasks, and use audible pop-up alarms for tasks with approaching due dates. Toodledo also allows you to create folders to categorize your tasks. There is even a feature that lets you create notes. It is the perfect tool for Professional Divas with a lot on their proverbial plates. Still with me?

Another great thing about Toodledo is that its basic version is free! And it’s not the kind of free that doesn’t allow you to take advantage of all of its great features. In case you’re interested, there is a Pro version ($14.95 per year) and a Pro Plus version ($29.95 per year). These advance versions allow you to create subtasks for project management.  They also allow you to use a scheduler, which allows you to specify how much time you have available to work and makes suggestions as to those tasks that can be completed in that amount of time. These versions are a little bit too fancy for me, but it can really be useful to other professionals depending on their current needs.

iPad App

iPod App
Just so you know, there’s and app for this! There is an excellent Toodledo app for the iPhone and the iPad, and there is a compatible app for Android phones. The apps sync seamlessly with the online program, and are perfect for adding tasks on the go.  And for those of you who use another to-do-list application, such as Outlook, Toodledo allows you to quickly and painlessly import your tasks.

In sum, I am so in love with Toodledo and the way it helps me organize and plan my hectic life. I seriously have folders for work items, home items, blog items, etc. I am almost positive that Toodledo can help you get your mind right! For more information on Toodledo, check out Toodledo.com. Have a great week Divas! And don’t forget to work and play hard!

10 Things We Really Don’t Need…But Would Make Life Easier…Or Just Better...Maybe!

Greetings Divas! Every Sunday as I prepare myself for yet another work week, I always find myself thinking of ways to make my busy life easier. Whenever I get on this wavelength, the worst thing for me to do is to start surfing the Internet. Why? Because the Internet is full of advertisements for things that I really don’t need, but could possibly make my life easier...or just better! I immediately start thinking about how a product, which I had never heard of before, could instantly improve my life. I suddenly need this product that I had managed to do without my entire life. How many of you have been here before? Well, get ready to go back there, because I have found 10 things that you really don't need, but could possibly make your life easier...or better...maybe. The Homedics massage pillow pictured here has a built in work light, cup holder, and back massager. Everything you need to effectively surf the Internet work in the comfort of your own bed.

2. The Water Bottle That Holds Everything – Don’t you hate going to the gym with a bunch of stuff in your hands? Your water bottle, your house key, your car key, cash for the juice bar, and identification…it’s too much! In comes this water bottle that holds it all quite conveniently. I like to call it a necessary convenience.

4. Portable Steamer – That awkward moment when the judge calls you out of the blue to tell you to immediately come to court, and your court suit hanging in your office is wrinkled. Two choices, go home an get another suit and be late for court (which is not really a choice), or head to court on time in your wrinkled suit. As you can probably tell, this has happened to me...twice! Obviously I didn't learn my lesson the first time. While this sordid tale is personal to me, the portable steamer is always a great product to have in your office…because you never know!

 5. Toothbrush Sanitizer – Your toothbrush is gross.Trust me on this one. Just get it. No explanation needed!

 6. Electric Wine Bottle Opener – Have you guys seen these things? They are fabulous! First, the design of the new models of electric bottle openers are positively sexy. 8. Cell Phone Sanitizer – I won’t gross you out with statistics on the amount of germs that plague your cell phone on any given moment. Let’s just say all the bad germs will end up on your cell phone at some point...each day! Cell phone sanitizers are a great way to cut down on some of the grossness. Is that a word?

9. Exfoliating Face Scrubber - Someone once told me that the two keys to great looking skin are drinking lots of water, and regularly exfoliating. Cut to the trendy electric exfoliating face scrubbers, all of which promise to remove dead skin cells that gives your face a dull appearance. The results: radiant, clean, and acne-free skin!

10. Laser Hair Removal - Waxing and/or shaving can be a pain in the neck for many women. And professional laser hair removal treatments are quite pricey. Cut to the do-it-yourself hair removal laser. The TRIA Laser Hair Remover pictured here is FDA-cleared, and is the first and only laser for hair removal available for at-home use. TRIA uses the same laser technology used by professionals for in-office laser hair removal for permanent results in the comfort and privacy of the home. TRIA also boasts that you can start seeing results with just 2 treatments. I need this now!

Are you mad at me for posting these products? What other products can you think of that would make your life easier, better, or both?

Mary Kay's Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover

Divas, how many times have you come home from a night out, and you were too tired to even think of taking off your makeup? So you don’t, and what results is a face full of clogged pores and makeup stained pillows. I have been here more times than I can count. I love wearing makeup, especially when I'm at work or out at a special event. I especially have a sweet spot for eye makeup of the waterproof variety. You know the kind I’m talking about right? The extra black waterproof mascara…the mineral eye shadow guaranteed to stay on through a night of partying…the black kohl eyeliner that makes your eyes pop…you’ve been there…I know!

The problem with this is that quality eye makeup is often difficult to take off with your average face wash. Here's where Mary Kay's Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover comes in handy. This remover is oil-free and hypoallergenic, and it gently removes all types of eye makeup...including the stubborn waterproof makeup that looks so good in those Facebook pictures. I personally use this product to remove my eye makeup. It is easy to use, and doesn't leave a greasy residue like many other removers. It also removes eye makeup gently, which is perfect for preserving the delicate skin around your eyes…double win!

If you are interested in learning more about this product, check out my website HERE! In the spirit of sharing…..!

Have a great week!
