4 Important Health Screenings For Women

Greetings Divas! And welcome to the week before the week leading up to Christmas. While I know you guys are busy shopping and preparing for the holiday season, I hope that you find a few minutes to read this post in its entirety, as it provides information on a very important topic: Women’s Health!

Now I am not a doctor in any shape or form, but I do have a great relationship with my primary physician. So great in fact that I often talk with him about different types of health-related screenings for women. In having these discussions with my doctor, and the nurse practitioners in his office, I have learned of a long list of health screening that all women should have, but neglect to get…hence the reason for this post!

In the spirit of sharing, please accept this list of the 4 important health-screenings that all women should have, and why. For all of my Professional Divas in the medical field, please feel free to comment on this list and/or add additional screenings. I would love for this to be an open forum for us to exchange information that is beneficial to our health, so help me out and spread the word!

Mammogram and Breast Examination – According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, and is one of the leading causes of cancer death among women of all races. As such, the American Cancer Society recommends the following breast screening guidelines for most adults:

  • Starting at the age of 40, women should have yearly mammograms so long as the woman is in good health;
  • Women in their 20s and 30s should have a clinical breast exam about every 3 years;
  • Women should conduct regular breast self-exams starting in their 20s;
  • All women should know how their breast normally look and feel, and should immediately report any breast change to their health care provider.
Please note that there are different breast screening recommendations based on a woman’s family history, genetic tendencies, or other factors. These women should speak with their doctor about the need for additional tests.

Pap Tests and Pelvic Exams – According to the CDC, the number of cases of cervical cancer and the number of death from cervical cancer has significantly decreased over the past 40 years. This decline is largely attributed to women getting regular Pap tests and pelvic examinations. These tests are successful in finding cervical pre-cancer before it turns into cancer. As such, this screening is a MUST for women! The American Cancer Society recommends the following cervical screening guidelines for most adults:

  • All women should begin screening for cervical cancer about 3 years after they begin having vaginal intercourse, but no later than 21 years old. These screenings should occur every year with the regular Pap test, or every 2 years using the liquid-based Pap test;
  • Beginning at age 30, women who have had 3 normal Pap test results in a row may get screened every 2 to 3 years;
  • Women older than 30 may get screened every 3 years with either the conventional or liquid-based Pap test, plus the human papilloma virus (HPV) test;
  • Women 70 years of age or older who have had 3 or more normal Pap tests in a row and no abnormal Pap test results in the last 10 years may choose to stop having Pap tests;
  • Women who have had a total hysterectomy may choose to stop having Pap tests, unless the hysterectomy was performed as a treatment for cervical cancer or pre-cancer; and
  • Women who have had a hysterectomy without removal of the cervix should continue to have regular Pap tests.
Again, there are different cervical screening recommendations based on a woman’s family history, genetic tendencies, or other factors. These women should speak with their doctor about the need for additional tests.

Blood Pressure ScreeningFact: High blood pressure can lead to heart disease and stroke, which are the 1st and 3rd leading causes of death in the United States, respectively. Fact: High blood pressure can also lead to congestive heart failure and kidney disease. Fact: One out of three adults in the United States has high blood pressure. Fact: High blood pressure is preventable! How you ask? In addition to adopting a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and being physically active, getting your blood pressure checked regularly is a great step towards prevention. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality recommends that women have their blood pressure checked at least every 2 years, so get tested!

Cholesterol Screening – Did you know that in the United States, more women than men have high cholesterol? According to the CDC, 10.3% of women age 20-34 and 12.7% of women age 35-44 suffer from high cholesterol. Need more numbers? Well, 19.7% of women age 45-54 suffer from high cholesterol. The interesting thing is that high cholesterol usually exhibits no signs or symptoms, but can increase your risk for health disease. How do you know if your cholesterol is high? You get a blood test! The National Cholesterol Education Program recommends that healthy adults have their cholesterol levels every 5 years. Have you had yours?

Okay Divas, these are my four. I challenge you all to take control of your health, meet with your team of medical professionals, and schedule the necessary tests. I hope that you all have learned a little something from this post. Again, I want this to be an open forum for an exchange of beneficial health information, so please spread the word!

Holiday Party Etiquette!

Greetings Divas and Gents! And Happy Friday! We are currently waist deep into the holiday season, and office holiday parties are upon us. It just so happens that my office’s holiday party is tonight, and I am definitely looking forward to the food, dancing, and networking that typically accompanies our parties. I am quite sure that many of you have frequented the office holiday party. I am also quite certain that many of you have witnessed inappropriate behavior at office holiday parties.

You all know about the inappropriate behavior in which I am referring don’t you? The woman from accounting who has had one too many drinks from the open bar…the guy from marketing who feels compelled to hit on any and every woman in the room with one goal in mind…the entry-level associate whose skirt is way too short to be showing everyone how low she can go while doing the Cha Cha Slide…you know the behavior I’m talking about!

I have recently been made aware that there are a group of Professional Divas-In-Training who love to read my ramblings on issues that they will face as they prepare to enter into the professional world. Please accept this post as an introduction to holiday party etiquette for the Divas-In-Training, and a refresher for us seasoned Divas. These are just a few tips that I have compiled based on my experiences, as well as the experiences my fellow Divas have shared with me over a round of martinis. Please feel free to add any additional jewels in the comment section below!

1. You Gotta Go! – For some, the thought of attending the office holiday party is not appealing for a variety of reasons. Maybe you don’t get along very well with your co-workers. Maybe you’re not a social butterfly and have no interest in socializing outside of the customary 9 to 5. In my opinion, not attending your office’s holiday party is a big mistake. This is the one time of year when many, if not all, of your company’s major players will be in the same room. This is the perfect time to become acquainted with them in a more comfortable setting. In addition, the office holiday party is sometimes an occasion where you and your colleagues are congratulated for your phenomenal work throughout the year…you want to be a part of that camaraderie. And, you don’t want to be singled out as someone who is not a team player or who lacks social skills. In sum, you are doing yourself a disservice by skipping out on the party. So, unless you have a previously-scheduled event that you cannot get out of, suck it up, go to the party, and have a good time!

2. Dress Appropriately – The office holiday party is not the club, and you should not treat it as such. Mini skirts and dresses, and overly tight pants are unacceptable! A better ensemble is an elegant cocktail dress, or a solid-colored dress slack with a festive blouse. These are just a few examples. Whatever you wear, make sure that your outfit is not water cooler talk the next day!

3. Mingle With Folks You Don’t See Everyday – The holiday office party is one of those events where the entire company gets together, including folks you don’t see every day. Use this event as an opportunity to network with people you don’t interact with on a daily basis. You can introduce yourself to the person you’ve been emailing back and forth all year and never met personally. Or you can strike up a conversation with your boss on something other than business. In any event, do not waste this opportunity to acquaint yourself with other members of your company. Fan out and mingle!

4. Refrain From Inappropriate Touching – Do I really need to elaborate on this one? I didn’t think so! It speaks for itself!

5. Minimize Business Talk – The office holiday party is a time to…party! Don’t be a party pooper by bringing up the deal you are currently working on…or complaining about a current client…or by breaking out a spreadsheet with figures and stuff on it! Leave the business talk, and your briefcase, outside the party. Now, I am well aware of the fact that eliminating business talk altogether is not realistic, but try not to begin a conversation with business. My rule of thumb is to only discuss business if someone, like my bosses, bring it up first. Just remember that the office holiday party is a fun event, so be cognizant of the amount of business you conduct during this time.

6.Open Bar is No Excuse to Get Wasted – This tip is so obvious that I didn’t see the point in mentioning it first, although it is definitely the most important (in my opinion). Many companies spring for the open bar for their holiday office parties. This is no excuse, however, for you to over-indulge. Getting sloppy drunk at the office holiday party is not only raggedy, but it is a great way to kill your career. I’ll let you all in on a little secret: I never, ever drink alcohol at office events. Gasp! This coming from the author of the Martini Chronicles! Now I’m not necessarily advocating this for everyone, but I have made a personal choice to remain sober when I am in the company of individuals who can fire me. I love and need my job! The other thing is that I never drink when I am driving. Maybe it’s the lawyer in me, but a DUI is quite anti-sexy, and not an option for me. If you decide to partake in spirits during the party, please do so responsibly. Know your limit, and don’t lose control. Also, please arrange for a designated driver if necessary. I don’t feel the need to elaborate any further, as we all know better…I hope!

7. Have Fun! – Office holiday parties are a lot of fun! I look forward to mine every year. Although I offered a few holiday party tips, please don’t assume that I am attempting to ruin your good time. I am not the party police! You should feel free to have a fabulous time partying with your colleagues, mingling with your bosses, and celebrating the holiday season and another successful year. All I ask is that you party responsibly, and remember that you are a professional.

That’s all I go for now! What are some of your do’s and don’ts for office holiday parties?

Martini Thursday!!!

The Frostini

There’s something about the holiday season that makes me crave dessert foods. Maybe it’s the Sweet Potato Pies that my aunts make for our holiday dinners. Maybe it’s the Pumpkin Cheesecake that is served in all of the steak houses in the city. Maybe it’s the Apple Pie that my co-worker insisted on bringing in the office for everyone to try. In any event, the holiday breeds the need for sweet treats…which is not great for my waistline. Please be forewarned that if any of you suffer from the lack of willpower like I do, you are really going to hate me when I share this week’s martini recipe…the Frostini

As the name suggests, the Frostini is a frozen drink. It also calls for ice cream and a blender. While you may be reading this thinking “the Pro Diva is wrong for this one,” I know you and your friends will secretly thank me once you taste the Frostini. So go ahead and gather your ingredients, and blend up the Frostini…no judgment!

Ingredients

2 oz of Your Favorite Vodka

1 oz of Amaretto Liqueur

1 oz of Coffee Liqueur (Like Kahlua)

1 oz of Irish Cream (Like Baileys)

2 scoops of Vanilla or Chocolate Ice Cream (Your Pick!)

Chocolate Syrup (For Garnish)

Mini Chocolate Chips (For Garnish)

Recipe

1. Rim the inside of a martini glass with chocolate syrup. Freeze for about 30 minutes.

2. In a blender, combine Vodka, Amaretto, Coffee Liqueur, Irish Cream, and Ice Cream. Blend! Mixture should be thick and pourable, but not liquidy.

3. Pour mixture into a chilled martini glass.

4. Garnish with Chocolate Chips.

Take a sip, and let the secret thanks begin! Enjoy! And Drink Responsibly

Don't Sleep On Healthy Options...Part Two!

Bacon, Ranch, and Chicken Macaroni and Cheese

Happy Hump Day Divas and Gents! As you may recall, a few months back I shared with you a recipe for macaroni and cheese that I found in my Cooking Light Magazine. The recipe shaved a whopping 500 calories per serving from the traditional mac and cheese recipe by substituting butter, eggs, and full-fat milk with butternut squash, skim milk, and non-fat Greek yogurt. While I was initially skeptical as to how the mac and cheese would turn out, I was pleasantly surprised by the results…it was delicious! (See Previous Post Here!)

I received a lot of positive feedback after posting this recipe…even from those who were expecting another martini recipe! As such, I thought it prudent to share yet another mac and cheese recipe that also sheds hundreds of calories from the traditional recipe. This time, Cooking Light suggests bacon, garlic powder, onion powder, and chicken to create the decadent Bacon, Ranch, and Chicken Macaroni and Cheese. I tried this recipe a couple of weeks ago, and it was AMAZING! Even more amazing are the nutritional stats (Because Professional Divas love stats!):

Classic Recipe
908 Calories Per Serving
963 Milligrams of Sodium
36 Grams of Saturated Fat

Cooking Light’s Recipe
497 Calories Per Serving
545 Milligrams of Sodium
7.4 Grams of Saturated Fat

WINNING! Now we can have our mac and cheese and eat it too! Check out the recipe for the Bacon, Ranch, and Chicken Macaroni and Cheese.

Ingredients

8 ounces uncooked elbow macaroni
1 slice applewood-smoked bacon
8 ounces skinless, boneless chicken breast, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 tablespoon canola oil
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 ½ cups fat-free milk
1/3 cup condensed 45% reduced-sodium 98% fat-free cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
¾ cup (3 ounces) shredded six-cheese Italian blend (such as Sargento)
½ teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon chopped fresh dill
1/8 teaspoon salt
Cooking spray
½ cup (2 ounces) shredded colby-Jack cheese

Preparation

1. Cook pasta according to package directions, omitting salt and fat; drain.

2. Cook bacon in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat until crisp. Remove bacon from pan, reserving drippings in pan. Finely chop bacon; set aside. Increase heat to medium-high. Add chicken to drippings in pan; sauté 6 minutes or until done.

3. Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat; sprinkle flour evenly into pan. Cook 2 minutes, stirring constantly with a whisk. Combine milk and soup, stirring with a whisk; gradually add milk mixture to saucepan, stirring with a whisk. Bring to a boil; cook 2 minutes or until thick. Remove from heat; let stand 4 minutes or until sauce cools to 155°. Add Italian cheese blend, onion powder, garlic powder, dill, and salt, stirring until cheese melts. Stir in pasta and chicken.

4. Preheat broiler.

5. Spoon mixture into an 8-inch square baking dish coated with cooking spray. Sprinkle evenly with reserved bacon and colby-Jack cheese. Broil 3 minutes or until cheese melts.

4 Quick Resume Tips!!!

Greetings Divas and Gents! One of the things I have come to really love about blogging is that I have met tons of dynamic individuals that I may not have met in my daily comings and goings. A couple of weeks ago, the Chronicles attracted a new reader, who happened to have strong opinions about the resumes that come across her desk. As we bonded over Tweets, @ShesheLaGhost suggested an idea for a post….I counter-suggested that she write it herself for the Chronicles.

And she did! What you are about to read are 4 quick resume tips from someone who reviews resumes as part of her daily duties. Sheila (@ShesheLaGhost) was born and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma. Throughout her career, she has dabbled in wardrobe styling and jewelry design, and is a self-proclaimed unprofessional comedian. She currently serves as a Personal Manager for Envy McKee. Please raise your martini glasses and help me welcome Sheila to the Chronicles!

---------------------------

Ok folks...I'm just going to jump right in and break it down. I'm not a resume building expert by any means, but I’ve had a few resumes pass my desk from time to time. Here are a 4 quick resume tips from the other side of the desk.

1. Get a Professional Email Address

Email addresses are generally free (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.). It takes approximately 6 minutes to open an email account. I can’t tell you the number of resumes I have come across where an applicant is using his or her high school or college email address as a point of contact. While this may be appropriate when one is interviewing for a position immediately following graduation, it is not appropriate once one has left their academic institution. In fact, an academic email may not even work once you’ve graduated. Take the time and sign up for a new account.

And while we’re talking about email addresses, please select and email consisting of some variation of your actual name. A professional resume with BoobsMcGee@yahoo.com as an email address gets passed over. But if I see BMcGee@yahoo.com …you get my point, right?

2. Spell Check (And a Friend) Is A Must

Your resume is your ticket to that great job you want, so don’t ruin your chances by having spelling and grammatical errors. Just about all resumes these days are created using a computer, which generally has spelling and grammar check. Also, you should solicit a friend or an adviser to proofread your resume for any spelling and grammatical errors.  When I am creating and updating my own resume, I use spell check and a friend (who is an underwriter for a newspaper). You should do the same!

3. Twitter/Text/FB Language
Social media jargon is unacceptable on a resume. DO NOT use JK, LOL, LMAO, IDK, LMFAO, ROTF anywhere in your resume…Period!

4. Photos (If Applicable)
Depending on the job you’re applying for, a photo may be required. If so, get a professional head shot made with a white or gray background. DO NOT (and I stress DO NOT) send a picture of yourself in a bar, on a beach, at a college frat party wasted beyond belief with your friends blacked out…completely inappropriate! I have had pictures like these attached to professional resumes, which results in chuckles of disbelief on my part. In these cases, the resume is deleted…even if you have a ton of awesome experience. The picture ruined any chance!

These are just a few tips based on my experience. I always suggest researching resume building and reviewing websites and agencies when preparing a professional resume. Happy job hunting!
