Work It Out!!!

Happy Sunday Divas! I am happy to report that Spring has finally sprung in the Northeast (where I’m located). With the warm weather comes less clothing and more skin. In keeping with the spirit of Spring and the impending Summer season, I’ve noticed that many of my blogging friends and subscribers are making an extra  effort to drop a few pounds and/or tone their bodies…I am no exception. First let me say that I am absolutely ecstatic that my fellow Professional Divas have found time to incorporate exercise into their work schedules. Exercise is vital to maintaining a healthy and divalicious lifestyle, and my fellow Divas get it!

Second, I must admit that it was not always easy for me to get motivated to exercise. Music, however, seems to be the one thing that gets me amped for a workout. Whether it be running that last mile, getting that final rep, or even getting started at all, fast-paced music always gives me the pick-me-up I need to get it right, and get it tight! I have several playlist on my iPod that I use during my workouts. Slowly, but surely, I plan to share these playlist with my fellow Divas in the hopes that the tracks will motivate you to get moving. First up is the list of tunes I use for a 30 Minute run (plus 4 minutes to cool down). Enjoy!

The Time (Dirty Bit) - The Black Eyed Peas - 5:08

Till The World Ends - Britney Spears - 3:58

Beautiful Monster - Ne-Yo - 4:11

Dynamite - Taio Cruz - 3:23

Born This Way - Lady Gaga - 4:20

Beautiful People - Chris Brown - 3:45

Only Girl (In the World) - Rihanna - 3:55

Gimme Dat - Ciara - 4:11

Liv Tonight - Nelly - 4:31

DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love - Usher - 3:42

Check back in a few weeks for another great playlist. Also, feel free to share some of your favorite workout tunes in the Comments section below. Have a fabulous week Divas!

Martini Break!!!

Strawberry Lemonade Martini

Its Thursday Divas…so you know what that means. It’s time for another great martini recipe! This week’s recipe was inspired by McDonald’s new beverage, the Frozen Strawberry Lemonade. Don’t judge! I told you I get my inspiration from everywhere! And this recipe is no exception. My biggest obstacle with this recipe was figuring out how to turn a frozen drink into a martini. Then I remembered that I am Diva, and I can do whatever I want! And so I did. This recipe calls for a blender, so dust it off and let get to making the Strawberry Lemonade Martini!

Ingredients
3 oz of Your Favorite Vodka
1 Cup of Fresh Strawberries
1 oz of Lemon Juice
1 Teaspoon of Sugar
Lemon Wedges for Garnish
Lemon Juice for Garnish
Cocktail Sugar for Garnish
Ice

Recipe
1. Wet the rim of a chilled martini glass with lemon juice, and lace with cocktail sugar. Set aside.
2. In a blender, puree strawberries in a blender with lemon juice and sugar. Mixture should be smooth and should pour easily.
3. In a shaker, combine vodka, ice, and strawberry-lemon mixture. Shake!
4. Strain mixture into the waiting martini glass.
5. Garnish with a lemon wedge.

Not quite the same as McDonald’s frozen Strawberry Lemonade, but I don’t think you Divas mind that much! Enjoy your Strawberry Lemonade Martini, and enjoy your weekend. Drink Responsibly!

Success: Leading With Impact

Good Evening Divas! I came across the great video clip while checking out the Forbes Woman website. It features tidbits of advice from various women in Corporate America who have succeeded in their respective fields. I may or may not agree completely with everything they are saying, but they definitely provide insight on many issues that professional women face when trying to climb the corporate ladder. Take a look at this video and let me know what you think! Have a fabulous night!

Diva Spotlight!!!

Lahesha Williams

Greetings Divas! I hope that your week has been productive! My week is just about to get better, as I am ready to introduce another fabulous Professional Diva that I have had the pleasure to meet…at least virtually. Today’s diva is Lahesha Williams from Chicago, Illinois. Lahesha, who has a degree in Information Technology (Networking), is an adjunct instructor at a local school’s Business Careers Program. In addition, Lahesha is the founder of Students Empowered, Inc., and Career Help for Christians. Both organizations seek to help individuals in career and professional development. Lahesha has graciously agreed to answer a few questions in the “Haute Seat.” Let’s get to know her better, shall we?!

Can you give a description of what you do in your current position?

Currently, I’m moonlighting as an adjunct Instructor at a local school in the Business Careers Program. I teach courses that help adults obtain any Microsoft Certifications. This role is great for me because I’m all about empowering people to be better in life, and how else can we impact the lives of others, other than by educating them.

Please give a summary of your resume, and how you landed at your current position.

My background includes more than 12 years of proven success in IT (Data Networks & Database Mgmt.), community outreach, project management, and career counseling. I worked with companies such as DeVry, Inc., Cisco Systems, Inc., and local Community Organizations.

My passion in life includes working with individuals to hone in on their potential to be a STAR in life! This is demonstrated by my current endeavors: Founder of a non-profit organization, Students Empowered, Inc. (high-school aged, student development non-profit organization); and Career Help for Christians (career and professional development blog/services).

What professional accomplishment makes you the proudest?

If I had to pick only one, it would definitely be the fact that I was recruited by Cisco Systems, Inc. before I graduated from my undergrad program – I had to negotiate my start date to begin AFTER I graduated! It was also a great accomplishment for me because I was a first generation college graduate (from a family who had only known poverty). So my children were able to see that hard work PAYS off ;-)

What is your advice for women who would like to enter into your profession?

Two things: 1) Outside of becoming an ‘expert’ in your discipline, you must take advantage of internships and volunteer opportunities. Be willing to accept roles that may not directly be attached to your education or goals if you do not have enough ‘relationship capital’ in your industry. 2) Learn how to be a great networker and connector of people – It’s so true that a lot of times, it’s not what you know, but who you know.

How do you balance you career with your personal life?

That is something I’m still learning how to do…but I am very intentional about MAKING TIME to enjoy life!

What do you do in your spare time?

What is that?? No really, I enjoy a good evening spent playing Bidwhist! I’m also a reader – I’m a fan of all things John Grisham, J.D. Robb, and most Christian living books.

Lahesha and Her "JOY"
What personal accomplishment makes you the proudest?

Hands down, the maturity level of my two wonderful Children! I call them my Pride (my son – 17 y/o) and my Joy (Daughter – 12 y/o). They are both so much like me, but in totally different ways from each other – if that makes sense.

My son is very academically driven, and a great athlete (Football – WR, Track, and bowling). He also takes his role as the only male in the household very seriously. If I had to categorize him, he would be one that uses the left side of his brain. My daughter is much more creative and free flowing in the way she processes things (a trait that my son and I love to have in the house!), she is a genuine lover of people, past their faults, actions and/or appearances. Oh, and she also LOVES to cook (I have NO IDEA where she gets that from!).

Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years, professionally and personally?

Professionally, one of my goals in life is to open a staffing agency, in 10 years I pray that it will be so.Those that know me personally, know that I am a Faith-Full person, unapologetically Christian. So one of my personal goals in life is to attend a seminary and work toward my MDiv!

What else do you want our readers to know about you and/or your career path?

A fact that I recently realized about each position I’ve held, it was because I volunteered at the agency or someone referred me for the position.

What is your favorite martini?

I’m not a drinker any more, but when I did have a drink or two, I would order a Mojito Martini.

Whew! What a great interview with Lahesha! She hit on some very important career tips that current and soon-to-be Professional Divas should consider. The one that sticks out the most is the importance of volunteering and internships, which is a great way to learn more about your craft in the beginning of your career. It is also a great way to meet others in your profession. Lahesha shares many other career and professional development tips on her blog/service website Career Help For Christians. Please be sure to stop in, and take advantage of all the great professional advice…I stop by all the time!

Professional Diva Must Haves.....

Shellac UV Nail Polish

Divas…I think I’ve stumbled upon a solution for the common problem us women have with chipped nail polish two days after a manicure. But before I share my new find, I want to give you a little background information about me. Historically, I have always hated getting manicures. Back when I was in high school and college, I alternated between acrylic tips (don’t judge me), and my natural nails. Even then, I hated getting colored nail polish because it took too long to dry, and it would chip after two days…I hated it! So in my professional life, I resolved to forego acrylic tips and nail polish altogether. I would keep my nails trimmed low, and would only use clear nail polish. This routine guaranteed that I would not be embarrassed in a business meeting or at a conference due to the chipping polish on my nails.

Over the past few years, I continued with this “clear nail polish” practice…that is until 2 weeks ago. Right before I went on my mini vacation to Germany, I stopped by the nail salon for a quick mani/pedi. As I was sitting in the massage chair getting my pedicure, I noticed an advertisement on the wall for Shellac. I was curious as to what it was, so I asked the nail technician for more information. She told me that Shellac was a new UV Gel system that boasts long lasting nail color (2 weeks!) with zero chipping, and quick drying time. I’m always up for a new challenge, so I agreed to try Shellac.

With the use of a UV Base Coat, UV Color Coat, UV Top Coat, and a UV Lamp, the nail technician transformed my “blah” nails into beautiful nails! And it only took her 10 minutes! You heard me right….10 minutes start to finish….I was dried and ready to go in 10 minutes! But here’s the real prize…the polish actually last for 2 weeks! No chipping, no dulling, no smudging. I washed my hands, hair, dishes, dog, etc., and there was no chipping. The polish stayed put! Needless to say, I am a fan, and I went back yesterday for a fresh color.
So, how does Shellac work? Check out this video...

And check out these before and after pics!

There you have it! The Shellac system is my new best friend. I now feel confident in showcasing my polished nails in the office. In fact, I have received many compliments on my polish. I think you Divas should definitely try it out! For more information, check out Creative Nail Design’s website at http://www.cnd.com/Consumer.aspx.
