Sheryl Sandberg: Why We Have Too Few Women Leaders

Greetings Diva! And congratulat0ions for making it over the hump! This evening, I want to share a video with you that I received from a colleague and good friend. The video features Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer of Facebook. You all have heard of Facebook, right (Joke!)?  Diva Sandberg is a graduate of Harvard College (B.A.) and Harvard Business School (M.B.A.). She is the former Vice President of Global Online Sales and Operations at Google, and former Chief of Staff at the United States Department of the Treasury. She is what you and I would call FABULOUS! How appropriate during Women's History Month!

In this video, Diva Sandberg highlights three messages for women who want to stand out and excel in their professions. She also gives great advice for women who want to stay in the workforce, even after starting a family. The three messages are:

Message #1- Sit at the Table (Because men are reaching for opportunities in the work place more than women.)

Message #2- Make Your Partner a Real Partner (You and your partner and/or spouse should share equal responsibilities.)

Message #3 - Don't Leave Before You Leave (Pregnant women should not "leave" the work place mentally, before actual maternity leave.)

I don't want to steal Diva Sandberg's thunder, so please take a few minutes to listen to her speech. It's about 15 minutes long, but it is so very insightful for women in business. I promise you it is NOT a waste of your time! Enjoy!

What do you think about Diva Sandberg's messages? Are her point relevant? Let's Discuss!

SpaFinder Wellness Week 2012!

Greetings Divas! As many of you may know, I am on a never ending quest to find different activities that are relaxing to me and my fellow Professional Divas. It is so easy for us to feel overworked and overwhelmed, which is not good for our health or our sanity! I was recently searching on the Internet for anti-stress activities and stumbled upon a great website: SpaFinder.com! In a nutshell, SpaFinder is a website that allows you to search for spas, yoga and Pilates studios, and wellness centers all over the U.S. I was totally hooked!

As I continued to salivate over browse through the website and the accompanying blog, I came across information for SpaFinder's Wellness Week 2012, which will take place on March 19-25! What is Wellness Week you ask? Wellness Week is your chance to improve the way you look and feel with exclusive spa treatments and wellness offerings at discounted prices (some 50% off!). You can choose from a variety of services, including massages, private training, laser hair removal, and teeth whitening. Wellness Week will take place at hundreds of spas, yoga, Pilates and fitness studios and wellness centers.
According to SpaFinder, starting March 19, 2012, Divas individuals may begin to search for participating spa or wellness locations by state, city, zip code, name of the business, or treatment and service. I suggest you take a moment to save this date in your Outlook or Toodledo calendars. Once you find the service(s) you need, give the location a call and book your appointment. It's just that simple!

Interested? Find Wellness Week deals at www.wellnessweek2012.com. And tell them the Pro Diva sent you! Okay, probably not a good idea to tell them that, but check it out anyway!

Business Blunders...Pre-Hire!

Greetings Divas! As we approach the beginning of yet another work week, I am reminded of the conversations I have had recently with a few of my readers who are entering or re-entering the workforce. I love having these conversations, as they give me a chance to reflect on some of the behaviors, good and bad, of career seekers. Instant inspiration!

Based on these conversations, I have decided to publish a 3-part post entitled “Business Blunders.” In reading this post, you have stumbled upon Part 1…Congratulations! This post will focus on business blunders that occur prior to one being hired. In fact, some of these blunders may contribute to you not being offered the sought after position. Now I know some of you may think that some of these things are minor and inconsequential, but think about it this way. If you have been granted an interview, chances are you have already met the basic requirements for the position…and so have all of the other candidates who have been granted an interview. The interview, as well as these “minor” and “inconsequential” things, are what set you apart from the other candidates. Any one of these business blunders may put the nail in the proverbial job coffin. That’s my spiel! So check out my list of pre-hire business blunders!

Blunder #1 – “Exaggerated” Resumes – Have any of you heard the story of the job seeker whose resume stated that he was fluent in Spanish…and he really wasn’t? His interviewer, out of the blue, conducted the job seeker’s interview completely in Spanish. Could you imagine what happened? This story has always stuck with me, and has always reminded me to be truthful on my resume. I advise you all to do the same. Your resume should only highlight the position you actually held, the honors you actually received, and the skills you actually have. It would suck to be caught in a lie during an interview, so keep it real!

Blunder #2 - Poor Company Research – Basic pre-interview rule. You should always do your research on the company you are asking to hire you. This rule is important for two reasons. First, researching the company will give you insight on whether the company and its culture is right for you. Second, there are a variety of standard interview questions that are designed to test your interest in the company itself. Be prepared and do your research before the interview.

Blunder #3 - Poor Position Research – Every interviewee should have at least a working knowledge of the position for which she is interviewing. How else would you know if the position is the right one for you? Also, researching the position is instrumental in gathering any questions you may have for the interviewer.

Blunder #4 – Inappropriate Interview Apparel – The first thing your interviewer is going to see if you outfit, so dress appropriately. What do I mean by dressing appropriately? There are many schools of thought on this issue. Some say your interview attire should be reflective of the culture of the company for which you are interviewing (company research comes in handy here!). Others say you should always wear a business suit. My initial thought is that you should wear a business suit, but that’s just my preference. In any event, your interview apparel should be neat. No beach, resort, of weekend wear.

Blunder #5 - No Thank You Note – Always send a follow –up note to your interviewer(s) following the interview. It doesn’t have to be anything long or drawn out….just something thanking him or her for the interview, and attaching any documents that may have been requested during the interview.

Blunder #6 - Social Media Suicide – Let’s face it…we live in a society where social networking has taken over. Please be conscious at all times of your privacy settings for your social media accounts. Why? Because interviewers are not above Googling you! How embarrassing would it be for you potential boss to Google your name, and your Facebook profile pops up with that picture of you at the club last weekend? Are you following me (no pun intended)? Go ahead and check your account settings before finishing this post….I’ll wait…..

Blunder #7 – Crazy Voice Mail – This is a simple one, yet many job seekers forget about it. Your voice mail message should state your name, and should ask the caller to leave their name, number, and a brief message….that’s it! No musical intro. No cussing. No nicknames. If this is the number you have on your resume for business calls, keep it professional.

That’s all for Part 1 of the Business Blunder series. What are some additional pre-hire business blunders? Please share in the comments section below!

Also, look out for Business Blunders – Post Hire!

Professional Divas Must Have...

Toodledo

Greetings Divas! Here we are at the beginning of a new work week...I’ll wait for the collective sigh! If you are anything like me, you cherish Sunday afternoons. Not just because there's a Real Housewives of Atlanta marathon on Bravo, but it is a time to plan and prepare for the upcoming week. I find that taking a few minutes to plan and prepare for the week helps me to be more efficient and productive during the week. As I stated in my previous post, “Preparation Is Key,” I take the time to plan what I will do each day at work, as well as what I will do before and after work. In doing so, I prioritize the things I need to accomplish, the things I want to accomplish, and any “extracurricular” activities I plan to get into during the week. Sounds a little neurotic? That may be true, but it helps me to maintain my sanity!

Over the past year, I have been using Toodledo to help me get my life in order. What its Toodledo you ask? Well, Toodledo is an online task and note manager that helps to improve your overall productivity. It allows you to enter, prioritize, and categorize your various to-do lists in an easy to use, online format. You can assign start dates and due dates to tasks, and use audible pop-up alarms for tasks with approaching due dates. Toodledo also allows you to create folders to categorize your tasks. There is even a feature that lets you create notes. It is the perfect tool for Professional Divas with a lot on their proverbial plates. Still with me?

Another great thing about Toodledo is that its basic version is free! And it’s not the kind of free that doesn’t allow you to take advantage of all of its great features. In case you’re interested, there is a Pro version ($14.95 per year) and a Pro Plus version ($29.95 per year). These advance versions allow you to create subtasks for project management.  They also allow you to use a scheduler, which allows you to specify how much time you have available to work and makes suggestions as to those tasks that can be completed in that amount of time. These versions are a little bit too fancy for me, but it can really be useful to other professionals depending on their current needs.

iPad App

iPod App
Just so you know, there’s and app for this! There is an excellent Toodledo app for the iPhone and the iPad, and there is a compatible app for Android phones. The apps sync seamlessly with the online program, and are perfect for adding tasks on the go.  And for those of you who use another to-do-list application, such as Outlook, Toodledo allows you to quickly and painlessly import your tasks.

In sum, I am so in love with Toodledo and the way it helps me organize and plan my hectic life. I seriously have folders for work items, home items, blog items, etc. I am almost positive that Toodledo can help you get your mind right! For more information on Toodledo, check out Toodledo.com. In the spirit of sharing….!

Have a great week Divas! And don’t forget to work and play hard!
